The most effective training options are stair repeats (a staircase or stadium steps with a light pack), loaded carries on gentle inclines, and simply hiking more. 2. Reduce Your Pack Weight

Go through your kit and categorise items as essential or comfort. Cut everything that's comfort on routes where speed matters. The 20-minute break at the top of a climb feels satisfying, but it's costing you more than time. Your muscles cool down, your joints stiffen, and the restart is harder than it should be. A cold body also burns more energy in the first few minutes of effort as it ramps back up to working temperature.
The better approach: break for 5 minutes every 45 to 50 minutes of moving time. Stand up or walk slowly rather than sitting down if possible. Eat a small snack, drink, check the map, and move again.
