Where are the Caucasus mountains located?

The Caucasus mountains are located at the intersection of Europe and Asia, stretching between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The surrounding area is also called the Caucasus.

These mountains are located in multiple countries: Georgia, Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Greater and Lesser Caucasus mountains location

The Caucasus mountains are actually two separate mountain ranges, the Greater and the Lesser Caucasus. The Greater Caucasus contains higher mountains and is generally considered to be more impressive.

The Greater Caucasus runs East-Southeast to West-Northwest. It starts close to Baku (at the Caspian Sea) and runs all the way to the Caucasian Natural Reserve in Sochi.

The Lesser Caucasus runs parallel to the Greater Caucasus and is located around 100 km (62 mi) to the South.

Surrounding areas

The surrounding area of the mountains is called the Caucasus as well.

The northern part of the Caucasus goes by the name Ciscaucasus (or simply the northern Caucasus).

The Southern part of the Caucasus, on the other hand, is called Transcaucasus (or simply the southern Caucasus).

What is the highest mountain in the Caucasus

The highest mountain in the Caucasus is Mount Elbrus with an elavation of 5,642 m (18,510 ft). Mount Elbrus is not only the highest mountain in the Caucasus, it is actually the highest mountain in Europe.

The Elbrus is located in the European part of Russia.

The most beautiful hiking trail in the Caucasus

For the most amazing hiking trails in the Caucasus, I would recommend the Georgian part of the Greater Caucasus.

There is even a website dedicated to documenting the most amazing trails in this area. The website is called caucasus-trekking. This is obviously an opinion and not a fact.
