Are adidas terrex shoes waterproof?

The adidas terrex shoes come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. A question that many people ask is: which adidas terrex are waterproof? Well, let me save you some time and give you the most clear answer possible.

All the Adidas Gore-Tex (GTX) terrex shoes are waterproof. Most Adidas Terrex shoes come with a regular version and a GTX version, the second one is the waterproof version.

An overview of the waterproof adidas terrex shoes can be found by clicking here.

Are adidas terrex waterproof

Are Adidas Terrex shoes waterproof?

So, you already know most of what there is to know. However, there are a couple of important things to mention.

There are 2 shoes within the Adidas Terrex collection that are waterproof on it’s own (without having a Gore-Tex version). These shoes are the Pathmaker Climaproof  and the SkyChaser LT.

So in conclusion, it doesn’t matter whether you ask me “are adidas terrex ax3 waterproof?”, “are adidas swift r2 waterproof?” or “are adidas terrex tracerocker waterproof?”, my answer would always be, sure as long as you get the Gore-Tex version.

That being said, some Terrex shoes are not available in a GTX version, this means that they are (usually) not waterproof. Keep in mind that the official website always has the clearest overview, but they don’t always show their full collection there either. So sometimes you might not find the shoe you like in the GTX version on the official website. Therefore, I would suggest to go to amazon and type in the model that you are looking for + Gore-Tex to make sure.

Is Gore-Tex actually waterproof?

Keep in mind that gore-tex is considered waterproof, but there is always a limit to how waterproof a fabric actually is. Meaning that if it rains enough, water might eventually start te seep through. If you want to know more about this, you should learn about the hydrostatic head rating and what this actually means.

If you are not interested in the specifics behind it, I will simplify it for you. Gore-Tex shoes are considered waterproof because they can resist a very large amount of water. It can eventually start to let water through, but only after a long time of heavy rainfall (we are talking extremes here). To give you an idea, a fabric is considered waterproof once it reaches a waterproof rating of 1,000 hydrostatic head. Gore-Tex has a minimum rating of 20,000, so there is probably nothing to worry about, but I thought I should mention it nevertheless.

Oh and the same applies for jackets and even tents, just so you know!

  • Terrex ax3 gtx hiking boots

Where to buy waterproof Adidas Terrex shoes

Most of the shoes that I listed are available on the outdoor adidas store, to see an overview of the available waterproof shoes simply click here.

However, some shoes are not available on their official store, for these shoes, I would recommend amazon. Some shoes that you are only going to find on amazon are the Adidas Terrex Tracerocker GTX and the Adidas Terrex Agravic GTX.

As usual, it somewhat depends on promotions when considering the best place to buy from. However, I have seen great promotions on both amazon and adidasoutdoor, so feel free to take a look around and see who had the best price!

What is the best waterproof adidas Terrex shoe?

I have always liked the Adidas Terrex Tracerocker, it even made it on 2 of my budget lists: the best cheap hiking shoes and the best cheap trail running shoes.

So I’m going to stick to my guns and say that these are still my favorite. However, I would have to say that this decision is very personal. Overall, the Adidas Terrex series has been well received and which specific model one likes more, depends more on the person than on the shoe.

For example, the AX2 and the AX3 feel somewhat uncomfortable on side walks because of the stiff sole. They thrive, however, on challenging hiking trails. So depending on what type of trails you will be hiking, you will (probably) hate or love these. Also, it obviously depends on whether you will be using these mainly for hiking or trail running.

So, in conclusion, difficult question to answer objectively. I’ll just say I prefer the Tracerocker, but consider it more of a personal choice. I might go more in depth abut the differences between the Adidas Terrex shoes in a later article (let me know if you would be interested).

How does Adidas waterproofing compare to other brands?

So, as I have explained earlier in this article, waterproof doesn’t mean that the fabric will hold water out forever. However, all GORE-TEX shoes are somewhat similar in terms of how waterproof the fabric is. Meaning that this would not vary that much between brands.

However, there are other factors to consider that can have a huge impact. It doesn’t matter that the fabrics are good, if the finishing isn’t. Mainly, accurate and seam sealing is important when it comes to waterproofing a shoe. However, durability also comes in to play. Once a fabric tears… well it obviously doesn’t matter how waterproof the fabric is, if it has tears in it.

So how does adidas hold up against other brands? It’s probably not a huge surprise that Adidas holds up pretty well. With the Terrex series come no magical shoes that will last forever, but adidas has always had a good finish on their products. And when it comes to the Terrex shoes, they are pretty durable. Keep in mind that trail running shoes or lightweight hiking shoes will never last as long as a traditional old school hiking boot, but still.

Another thing to consider is that if you wear low cut shoes, water will usually find its way in your shoe down your legs. Therefore, if you really care about keeping your feet dry, consider mid cut shoes, or waterproof gaiters.

Conclusion

The article started with a simple question.

Are adidas terrex shoes waterproof?

And was answered with a simple answer.

Yes, as long as you get the GTX version of the shoe – and there are a couple of exceptions.

All in all, a really simple conclusion. Adidas Terrex GTX shoes are waterproof!
